Cisco IOS Configuration Fundamentals

Cisco Systems is a name that is synonymous with high-speed and
high-performance Internet connectivity. They are the number one router
manufacturer and a leader in the router and access server industry. This
book provides an invaluable reference to the fundamental commands that
are required in order to perform basic configuration and setup of their
products.

Cisco IOS Configuration Fundamentals is intended primarily for users who
configure and maintain access servers and routers, but are not necessarily
familiar with all the tasks available on the systems and how these tasks
may relate to each other.

Many Cisco users are aware of features that are supported in the
software, but may not know the specific commands necessary to take
advantage of these features. Readers will find this an ideal reference
as it enables them to skim and browse the command reference and the very
complete examples, and to use the "Related Commands," summary in each
section to investigate these inter-relations.

The book presents information relating specifically to the physical
media supported by Cisco Routers and Access products, as well as the
network and routing protocols and the various terminal services. This
list is comprehensive, and although a typical user will take advantage
of only a small set of the features available, knowing what is available
may help them as their installations grow.

Each of the chapters deals with a particular aspect of the technology and
is organized in a manner that connects readers from one piece of
information to another. The command references are laid out with all the
options to the commands, and information on how to interpret the results
of the commands. Complex tasks are presented step by step and have real
world explanations about what each command is doing.

Of particular notice should be the "caution," "notes," and "timesaver"
graphics interspersed throughout the book that make suggestions, warn
about potential "gotcha's" and summarize information that the authors
deem to be particularly important. These notices make interesting
reading, even for the seasoned expert, as they often give some insight
into other uses for commands.

The information presented in this book is essential in order to configure
and maintain any of Cisco's products running the IOS operating system.
Users who wish to become expert on Cisco Router configuration, or who just
want to get the job done right, should have this book handy, as a
supplement to Cisco's online systems.
